ALTOS Sat

A flexible solution for embedding into awkward shapes

ALTOS Sat is designed for small or difficult shaped products that have a limited space available to embed a sensor. By splitting the LiDAR unit from the control unit of the LiDAR (LCU) the solution overcomes problems of mechanical size constraint. This makes ALTOS Sat perfect for the fast-evolving world of robotics, in which sensors are often required to fit into, for example, the corner of a robot.

ALTOS Sat enables the integration of multiple base sensors (TRX) in different places within a product to maximize the total LiDAR coverage. The compact size and low power consumption allow for flexibility to install the LiDAR units in different ways.

By splitting the scanning unit from the control unit of the LiDAR (LCU) the solution overcomes problems of mechanical size constraint.

Different Setup Options

There are two configurations in which the ALTOS Sat can be used. The first, is in combination with an LCU (LiDAR Control Unit) that can be placed up to 15m from the LiDAR units. This has the benefit of a faster time to market, as there is no need to update the platform's compute unit. The second option, is to integrate the LCU's functionality into the platform's compute unit which has the benefit of saving on cost. In addition, Opsys LiDAR units have the added benefits of not requiring any active cooling elements and are fully solid-state.

The simple electronic design is robust to vibration and temperature variations and has a low unit to unit variance. It is designed for high volume production, and with its simplicity of assembly and calibration means it is overall an extremely cost-effective solution.

ALTOS Sat operates in a wide temperature range, from -20°C to +65°C and is supported in harsh conditions. It is extremely reliable, delivering a high resolution point cloud, at an affordable price for mass production. It is compact in size: 84W x 39H x 59D (mm).

Setup for a delivery pod

ALTOS Sat is a robust solution. It is also small, and Opsys’ technology that it is based on, is designed as a Lego-brick system, to offer the ultimate in flexibility when it comes to integration for very specific architecture requirements. It is easy to define the necessary field of view (FOV) and resolution for each application. In addition, using the remote LiDAR configuration maximizes the efficiency of the LiDAR units.

Benefits of ALTOS Sat

  • Enables the capability to split between the TRX and the control and compute units. This minimizes the installation size and reduces the heat dissipation management

  • Many installations options that were not possible due to existing LiDAR units technology can now be supported

  • There is no active element for laser cooling

  • All of the above allows for easy installation and ensures keeping the original platform shape to reduce development time
